Proverbs 27:1
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.
In Psalm 90:12, David says, “So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” I love how the New Living Translation says, “Teach us to realize the brevity of life so that we may grow in wisdom.” Wisdom is the absolute antidote for getting off the life of self-gratification through sin (Galatians 5:16-18) to honoring God’s will for our lives, which is the way of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10) and eternal life (Romans 2:7-8). How, then do we redeem time?
1. Walk in wisdom
The scripture likens wisdom to light. Daniel 12:3 says, “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” Wisdom comes from the knowledge of God’s will for our lives (Ephesians 5:8-11), and when we choose light over darkness and wisdom over foolishness, God directs our path such that even when we fall short, His mercy gets us back up again (Psalm 37:23-24). When we know the truth, everything else falls into place. Therefore, the first way of redeeming the time is getting light through a heart of wisdom.
2. Make the right choices
The second way of redeeming time is by consciously making the right decision. Often, we zombie our way through life and hope that things will work out in the end, yet God says that He promises to “establish the work of our hands for us” (Psalm 90:17). Even Psalm 37:23-24 says that He orders the steps of the righteous which means that you have to be moving. Consciously choose to do what is right so that your time on earth will count for something even when it isn’t immediately apparent (Galatians 6:9). In this way, you will redeem the time lost in past mistakes or potential loss in your present and future decisions.
3. Prioritize responsibilities
Prioritization is the other way of redeeming the time. Adulting being what it is will have you busy all the time, and often, it may count for nothing more than burnt calories. Having a sense of purpose, which is what redeeming time is, allows you to filter decisions based on that goal. Paul phrases this well in Philippians 3: 13-14, saying, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” I can’t imagine what kind of schedule someone like Paul would have. Between preaching, imprisonment, shipwreck, and discipleship, it would be a wonder if he managed to keep any routine. Yet he says, “one thing I do,” meaning that he acknowledged the place of efficiency through prioritization.
4. Count the cost
Another way of redeeming time is by counting the cost. When we plan, we ease the process of execution, which saves our time. This concept comes from Luke 14:28-30 which says that planning is a prerequisite to action. When we know what we need to do, we can be more efficient by allocating time to various tasks progressively, getting help from people who can assist, and removing anything that would cause the work to either slow down or stop. Nehemiah, when he was rebuilding the Jerusalem walls, is the best example of someone who planned. Before he began the work, he says, “And I went out by night …and viewed the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which were burned with fire” (Nehemiah 2:13). Even though God sent him to do the work, he also did his part. Abraham Lincoln said, “If I only had an hour to chop down a tree, I would spend the first 45 minutes sharpening my axe.”
5. Work diligently
Finally, work diligently. Even with the most well-thought-through plan, without the hard work to execute, it could fall apart even without the devil’s intervention. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” God delights in a hard worker. The parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 shows three employees who were given 5, 2, and 1 bag of gold each. The master went on a journey and when he got back, the one with five bags had 10, the one with two had four but the one who had one bag said that he was afraid of his master’s harshness and hid the bag to give it back when his master got back. Upset, the master said he should have at least put it in the bank to gain interest. He took the bag from the lazy guy and gave it to the one who had 10 bags because “to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away” (Matthew 25:29). God adds to us even what we may not have necessarily worked for when we’re careful to honor what he gives us by being diligent. This exponential increase is a mark of redeemed time.
Conclusion
In our lifetime, we may not be able to accomplish everything we want to do. But when we surrender our wills to God, we harness His redeeming power. Jesus, who lived for only 33 years and was in active ministry for a measly three years, had such an impact that over 2,000 years later, even those who don’t believe in Him acknowledge His great work. Having died and given us redemption, we can live an impactful and fulfilling life by allowing God to redeem our time. Take your chance at a fullfing life today!
